Installation Instructions for the Golf & GTI
Beetle   |   Bora/Jetta   |   Golf/GTI   |   Passat

Note: Please read all instructions until you feel comfortable and everything is clear.

These installation instructions assume you have some electronics knowledge. If you have installed a car radio, amplifier, or a car alarm before this should be a easy job for you. If you are not comfortable with the procedures explained below, we recommend you find a qualified individual to help you with the installation.

These installation instructions also assume you have already installed a Turbo Timer in your car. If for any reason you decide to install a Turbo Timer and the Turbo Timer COMPANION Lite together, we recommend you install the turbo timer first in order to check that it's working properly and then proceed to install the Turbo Timer COMPANION Lite. This way in case you encounter a problem you will know which device is having the trouble.
Using this DIY below will help make the installation much easier. MAKE SURE to ALWAYS review the instructions first in order to check for different color wires the COMPANION Lite may use or for any additional info on the installation procedure. ALWAYS test the wires and NEVER rely solely on the instructions. Use this DYI as a guide ONLY.

Step 3:

Now that we have the door panel and interior panels removed, we will  locate the proper wires to use with the COMPANION LiteŽ unit. Cut away a few inches of the wiring harness sheathing so you have access to the wires inside. First locate the door LOCK wire in the harness on the door. (On most VW the LOCK=Yellow/Blue) If your not sure of the wire or you think you have the correct one, execute the "Door Lock Test" to insure you have the right wire. Making sure you have the right wire this will ensure you do not damage the COMPANION LiteŽ unit and void the warranty.

Note 1:

Before you can perform the following tests, you must close the door lock mechanism. To close the mechanism, insert a panel removal tool or screwdriver into the mechanism push the latch back until it clicks into place. Once this is closed, the car will think the door is closed allowing you to lock  the doors to perform the test. To open the door lock mechanism, simply open the door handle from the inside. If you do not open the mechanism, and try to close your door, you may damage the locking mechanism.
Note 2:

To find the LOCK wire, you must find the wire harness located in the door. You have to brake the Insulating tape of the harness to locate and test the LOCK wire. Here is a pic of the wire harness that you will find below the window motor.
* Please Perform Door Lock Test

DOOR LOCK TEST >> To search or to make sure you have found the correct door LOCK wire, connect the 12V circuit tester to ground or a 3 or 5 amp fused wire to ground should work as well. Quick taps on the lock wire should lock the door. If you hold the connection, the windows should roll up. If the doors lock and the windows go up then you found the correct LOCK wire. If for any reason the fuse blows, this means that it is not the correct wire you need. Take another 3 or 5 amp fuse and look for another wire until you find the correct one.

  3. Pull the COMPANION LiteŽ BLUE wire through the grommet, and run wire along the door wire harness.

  5. Insert the grommet and rubber boot back into their locations.

Step 5:

If you look up under the dash you will notice the Comfort Control Module (CCM) and ignition switch wiring harness.

You have to brake the insulating tape of the ignition switch wiring harness to locate and test 12V constant, ignition power and ground.

Note: In the ignition switch harness you can find the 12V constant, ignition power, Accessory power and ground connection for the Turbo Timer.

TEST 1 -Use a Voltmeter or a 12V Test probe and search for these wires.
  1. To check for constant 12 volts, find the wire that supplies 12 volts at all times.
  2. To check for ignition power, this wire has 0 volt with ignition off and with the ignition switch ON, it will read 12 volts.
Connections from the COMPANION LiteŽ wires can be spliced into the turbo timer wires.

  1. Connect the COMPANION LiteŽ RED wire to constant 12 volt supply, solder and tape your connections.

  2. Connect the COMPANION LiteŽ YELLOW wire to ignition power, solder and tape your connections.

  3. Connect the COMPANION LiteŽ BLACK wire to chassis ground, solder and tape your connections.

  4. Apply double sided tape to the COMPANION LiteŽ module and place it on top of the Comfort Control Module (CCM)

Select Options:
If you only want the oem alarm to activate and lock the doors, flip the switch on the device to setting: [0]

** If you have the Roll Up Windows option and want to stop the windows form closing, press UNLOCK button on the oem remote, it will stop the windows from rolling up and turn off the alarm.

Important Note: If turbo timer is NOT in use once key is removed from the ignition, the COMPANION LiteŽ will activate 2 seconds later. In order to keep the COMPANION LiteŽ from locking the doors and activating the alarm, you must open drivers doors before turning off ignition. if you would like to install a ON/OFF switch so you can turn off the COMPANION LiteŽ, in the event that you need to turn it off for any reason.(service, valet , etc..)you can pick up a SPST ON-OFF MINI TOGGLE SWITCH at radio shack or any electronics outlet. If you would like more information on how to install the on/off switch, See how to install it here.
